Every official document, professional licence, student card or visa can require a different portrait. This guide clearly explains the delivery format, dimensions, background and essential rules for each application.

Updated 24 September 2026. Authorities may change specifications or request extra copies. Bring any email, application form or sample supplied by the authority. Final acceptance always belongs to the issuing authority.
Greek identity and residence documents
Greek passportDigital · myPhoto
- Delivery: Digital photo through myPhoto for applications in Greece. Printed 40×60 mm photos remain relevant to specified consular cases abroad.
- Portrait: Recent colour biometric portrait, front-facing, neutral expression, open eyes and a uniform light background.
- Glasses: Clear lenses only, with no glare and no frame covering the eyes.
Greek passport for a child without AMKAException · 40×50 mm
- Who qualifies: The printed-photo exception concerns Greek citizens living abroad who apply in Greece and cannot use myPhoto because the minor has no AMKA.
- Delivery: A recent printed 40×50 mm portrait plus the required declaration explaining why myPhoto cannot be used.
- Electronic delivery in Magnesia: The authorised photographer must email the photograph from their registered professional email address to the competent Passport Department at diavatiria.admagnisias@astynomia.gr.
- Important: A child without an AFM does not automatically need a printed photo. For minors with AMKA, a parent or guardian can normally complete myPhoto.
Baby or young child passportDigital · myPhoto
- Delivery: Digital photo through myPhoto, linked to the child by a parent or guardian.
- Portrait: The child must appear alone. No adult hands, toys, pacifiers or other people may be visible.
- Babies: Practical allowances apply, but the face and eyes should be visible as clearly as possible.
New Greek identity cardDigital · myPhoto
- Delivery: Uploaded to myPhoto by a certified photographer and authorised by the citizen.
- Portrait: Front-facing biometric portrait, neutral expression, uniform light background and no alteration of facial features.
- Glasses: Eyes must remain fully visible and free from glare.
Driving licence — issue, renewal or replacementDigital photo + signature
- Photo: Colour JPEG, maximum 3 MB, exactly 1280×1600 px, ratio 4:5.
- Signature: Separate grayscale file, 1200×400 px, ratio 3:1.
- Portrait: Clear full face, plain background and no strong shadows or glare.
Greek residence permit or cardPrinted + digital
- Type: Recent colour passport-standard portrait.
- Quantity: The authority may request two or four prints, depending on permit category.
- Digital file: Some procedures request JPEG2000 on digital media; online applications may request a passport photo up to 2 MB.
Students, schools and everyday cards
School pass, school ID or student recordPrinted · 35×45 mm
- Size: The standard ID-style photograph for a school pass, school ID or student record is 35×45 mm.
- Delivery: Printed copies or a JPG file for online registration.
- Bring with you: Bring the school form, email or screenshot so we can follow the requested dimensions.
Academic ID and university student passDigital · at least 240×240 px
- File: JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 1 MB and at least 240×240 pixels.
- Portrait: Recent colour photograph on a neutral background, clearly showing only the beneficiary’s face.
- Restrictions: No sunglasses. Headwear must be removed unless worn for religious reasons without hiding facial features.
General ID-style photographsPrinted · 35×45 mm
- Uses: Sports clubs, schools, tutoring centres, gyms, membership cards, volunteer groups, applications, CVs and internal business IDs.
- Size: A standard ID-style photograph is 35×45 mm. A different size is prepared only when explicitly requested by the organisation or its template.
- Digital: JPG with the exact pixels and file size requested by the platform.
Professional licences and special documents
Digital tachograph cardDigital photo + signature
- Photo: JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF; minimum 800 px wide and 1200 px high; passport-photo standards.
- Signature: JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF; at least 1200×480 px.
- Portrait: Uniform light background, full frontal face and neutral expression.
Speedboat operator licence2 prints + digital
- Quantity: Two recent colour ID-style prints and the matching digital file.
- Digital size: At least 450 px wide and 513–531 px high; larger files need a 1.14–1.18 height/width ratio.
- Portrait: Front-facing, neutral expression and uniform background.
Agricultural machinery or tractor licencePrinted
- Quantity: Usually two recent small colour ID- or passport-style photographs.
- Size: No single mandatory centimetre or pixel size is published nationally; follow the Regional Unit’s instructions.
- Portrait: Light background, front-facing and neutral expression.
Private security personnel licence4 prints
- Quantity: Four recent colour photographs in police-ID format.
- Size: The official central listing does not provide exact centimetres or pixels.
- Portrait: Light uniform background and clear frontal face.
Taxi driver special licencemyPhoto or prints
- Delivery: The digital process uses a certified myPhoto portrait; an in-person initial application may request two ID-size prints.
- Replacement: A replacement licence may require one recent ID-style photograph.
- Portrait: Biometric, front-facing, light background and no glare.
Seafarer’s book3 prints · 35×45 mm
- Quantity: Three recent ID- or passport-style photographs.
- Size: 35 mm wide × 45 mm high.
- Portrait: Uniform light background, frontal face and neutral expression.
Hunting or firearm permit2 recent prints
- Quantity: The procedure requests two recent face photographs.
- Size: No universal mandatory dimensions are stated in the central listing; confirm with the police authority.
- Portrait: Clear ID-style portrait on a light background.
Military personnelAccording to service order
- Size: Requirements vary by document; passport style or 3×3 cm may be requested.
- Clothing: Civilian clothing or the prescribed uniform is defined by the unit.
- Bring with you: Bring the service order showing quantity, dimensions, background and uniform.
Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service and security forcesAccording to authority
- Size: Requirements differ between service IDs, access cards, competitions and academies.
- Clothing: Civilian clothing or a particular uniform may be required.
- Bring with you: Bring the authority’s document or a photo of the sample.
Lifeguard licence3 prints or digital
- Quantity: Three recent ID-style photographs.
- Digital size: At least 450 px wide and 513–531 px high; ratio 1.14–1.18 for larger files.
- Portrait: Front-facing face, neutral expression and clean uniform background.
Individual professional fishing licence2 prints
- Quantity: Two recent ID-style photographs.
- Delivery: Printed photographs submitted to the Port Authority.
- Size: The central procedure does not specify centimetres; follow any newer local instruction.
Visas and international applications
China visa33×48 mm
- Size: 33 mm wide × 48 mm high; head width 15–22 mm and head height 28–33 mm.
- Background: White or near-white, full frontal face, neutral expression and closed lips.
- Glasses: Thin clear frames only, without tint or glare.
United States visa and Diversity Visa51×51 mm · square
- Print: Exactly 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), head height 25–35 mm.
- Digital: Square JPEG, 600×600 to 1200×1200 px, up to 240 KB, sRGB.
- Glasses: Not permitted except for a rare documented medical need.
Schengen visaUsually 35×45 mm
- Size: Usually 35–40 mm wide, with head and shoulders occupying 70–80% of the image.
- Background: Light plain background, even lighting, frontal face and natural skin tones.
- Important: Confirm the number of prints and any local consulate instructions.
Canada visaAt least 35×45 mm
- Size: At least 35×45 mm; chin-to-crown head height 31–36 mm.
- Quantity: Paper applications request two identical photographs; biometrics-based cases may not require prints.
- Glasses: Clear prescription glasses only, with no glare or frame over the eyes.
India visa and e-VisaDigital · square
- File: Square JPEG. Regular online visa: 350×350 to 1000×1000 px and 10–300 KB; e-Visa accepts 10 KB–1 MB.
- Background: White or light plain background, full frontal face and no shadows.
- Glasses: Not permitted by the official e-Visa specification.
United Kingdom visa or eVisaDigital · JPEG
- File: JPG/JPEG, portrait orientation, at least 600×750 px, 50 KB–6 MB.
- Portrait: New, colour, unedited image showing head, shoulders and upper body on a light plain background.
- Glasses: Remove unless necessary; no tint, glare, shadow or frame covering the eyes.
Australia visa, citizenship or ImmiCardDigital · 1200×1600 recommended
- Digital: Citizenship: colour JPEG 70 KB–3.5 MB, recommended 1200×1600 px. ImmiCard: 1200×1600 px, up to 500 KB.
- Print: Where requested: 35–40 mm wide × 45–50 mm high; face 32–36 mm.
- Glasses: Remove unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons.
Japan visa35×45 mm
- Size: 35 mm wide × 45 mm high, as stated on the official form.
- Portrait: Recent passport-style portrait, front-facing, neutral expression and plain light background.
- Important: Quantity and submission method depend on visa category and consulate.
General rules for a correct document photograph
- Come without a hat and keep the entire face clearly visible.
- Avoid a broad smile whenever a biometric, neutral expression is required.
- Hair must not cover the eyes or important facial features.
- Remove glasses whenever the country requires it or glare appears.
- Retouching must not change facial features, face shape, scars or identifying marks.
- Babies and young children receive practical allowances, but no hands, toys or other people should appear.
Digital or printed photograph?
We deliver exactly what the procedure requests: through myPhoto, as a JPEG/PNG file with exact pixels and file size, by email or USB, or as professional photographic prints. We also prepare a separate digital-signature file when required.
