Story and purpose

A family collage may follow generations, whereas an anniversary design needs a clear relationship between then and now. For memorial use, avoid decoration that competes with the person. Send a short statement of purpose with the pictures so that the design is not founded on a mistaken assumption.

Quantity and hierarchy

Choose one or several lead photographs and let others support them instead of reducing every image to the same small size.

On a large poster, the lead image can read from a distance while smaller ones reveal themselves nearby. If everything carries equal weight, the eye wanders without a reference point. Grid and freeform

A grid offers order and alignment, while freeform creates movement but needs discipline in its overlaps and varied angles.

A grid suits a school class, business team or series of similar portraits because it establishes an even rhythm. Freeform works better for travel or celebrations containing varied types of photograph. Even there, shared margins and sufficient empty space are needed if the result is not to look improvised.

Crop and resolution

Check every file for focus, compression and margins because a screen can conceal weaknesses that become visible in print.

A picture taken from social media may have lost information through compression. Request the original from its creator or capturing device. If an important old file is small, assign it a smaller frame rather than stretching it. Quality must be judged at the intended output size.

Wording, proof and privacy

Keep titles brief, check names and share sensitive family material by an agreed secure method before approving the proof.

On the proof, inspect faces and crops first, read every word second, then assess overall balance. Decide who approves when several family members are involved. For sensitive material, agree a transfer method and ask how working files are handled after completion.
